Application of multi-objective Bayesian shape optimisation to a sharp-heeled Kaplan draft tube

Abstract The draft tube of a hydraulic turbine plays an important role for the efficiency and power characteristics overall system. shape affects its performance, resulting in increasing need data-driven optimisation design. In this paper, elbow-type is undertaken, combining Computational Fluid Dynamics multi-objective Bayesian methodology. chosen design objectives were to maximise pressure recovery, minimise wall-frictional losses along geometry. variables explore potential new designs, using series subdivision-curves splines on inflow cone, outer-heel, diffuser. run was performed under part-load Kaplan turbine. with lowest energy-loss identified Pareto-front found have straight tapered diffuser, chamfered heel, convex cone. Analysis performance quantities showed typically used factor recovery highly correlated cases constant outflow cross-sections, therefore unsuitable use optimisation. Finally, number designs tested over range discharges. From it that reducing heel size increased wider operating range.
